What is black zapote (“sapote”)?
Black zapote (some people write “sapote”) is a green fruit on the outside, but it has black pulp on the inside. It is popular since pre-hispanic times.
Zapote can be a little misleading at first sight. You’d be surprised that it is really a very sweet and creamy fruit.
Some people say it’s like eating chocolate mousse!
But zapote is not only delicious, it’s also a very nutritional fruit with many medicinal properties.

Zapote and banana smoothie recipe
- 3 Black zapotes
- 2 Bananas
- 1/2 cup Milk
- 1/2 cup Sugar
- 1/4 cup Rum (You can use brandy)
- Peel the zapotes and strain them.
- Blend the zapote with the banana, milk, sugar and rum.
- You can also put the smoothie in the fridge and serve cold.
